MBD is a leading UK-based creative studio pioneering immersive storytelling at the intersection of art, culture, and technology.
As an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, we specialise in crafting impactful experiences that blend artistic vision with cutting-edge immersive media—from VR and AR to interactive installations and digital theatre.
We’re a not-for-profit driven by a simple idea: creativity should make a difference. Whether we’re reimagining heritage spaces, amplifying community voices, or exploring socially relevant themes, our goal is to create work that is imaginative, accessible, and rooted in positive change.
Our Story
MBD began its journey in 1996 as a theatre company, rooted in the belief that live performance could spark real-world impact.
Over time, our curiosity led us to new frontiers—blending physical and digital, live and virtual. We embraced emerging technologies like VR, AR, and motion capture, evolving into a multi-disciplinary studio at the intersection of art and innovation. The majority of our current and future work is focused on Virtual Reality.
We are a workers’ cooperative, so every member of staff has a say in what we do and how we do it. Our team is our strength, and we work together to expand our offer through collaborative and experimental working.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY: We believe in taking action on environmental sustainability not only to improve our business resilience, but because we feel that it’s the right thing to do, for our communities and our planet, now and into the future. Each year, we actively offset our carbon emissions by funding green projects both in the UK and internationally, reinforcing our commitment to a more sustainable future.
