SOUTH AFRICA WW1

360 VR SHORT FILM

THE PROJECT

South Africa World War One is a series of 2 VR films that redefines the narrative surrounding South Africa's involvement in World War One. By shedding light on the experiences of the country's harbour workers and showcasing the diverse contributions of all population groups, this immersive experience offers a more comprehensive and inclusive perspective on the war.

Traditionally, remembrance of World War One in South Africa has focused primarily on events in European battlefields, overlooking the significant role played by local communities and the broader impact of the war on the nation's development. South Africa World War One seeks to rectify this by exploring a wide range of narratives, including the country's rich natural resources that fueled the war economy and the battlefield experiences of populations across Africa, Palestine, and Europe.

Through innovative storytelling and immersive VR technology, South Africa World War One brings these overlooked stories to life, fostering a sense of joint commemoration that speaks to people of all ages and backgrounds. By making the commemoration of World War One more widely accessible and socially inclusive, this project honors the diverse contributions and sacrifices made by South Africans during this pivotal period in history.

HOW WE DID IT

MBD worked with Aston University and KwaZulu-Natal museum in South Africa to create two VR films that are part of the museums permanent exhibition, and shared online. Our approach involved shedding light on overlooked narratives, particularly those of harbour workers, and showcasing the diverse contributions of all population groups. Utilizing Virtual Reality, 360 Animation, and Compositing, we brought these untold stories to life.
